Lisa Riordan Seville

I am a reporter, filmmaker and Senior Producer on the film team at ProPublica.

My work explores how money, power and policy shape the lives of everyday people across the United States. My stories have appeared across NBC News platforms, as well as in New York Magazine, Buzzfeed News, The Guardian US, The Nation, WNYC Public Radio and VICE, among other outlets. I’ve received support from the Investigative Fund (now Type Investigations), the Magnum Foundation and the Dennis A. Hunt Fund for Health Journalism. In addition to being part of Peabody and Hillman award-winning teams at NBC News, my stories have been recognized by Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Deadline Club, the Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism, the Stephen B. Shepard Prize for Investigative Reporting, the Association for Business Journalists and a Sigma Delta Chi award from the Society of Professional Journalists. I have a bachelor’s in English and Art Practice from U.C. Berkeley, and a master’s in journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism.

I created and produced @EverydayIncarceration with Zara Katz. The collaborative Instagram feed  tells visual stories of mass incarceration in the United States. Our multimedia project about the impact of incarceration on women who support loved ones behind bars debuted at Photoville, an outdoor photography festival in Brooklyn, in September 2016. It was also exhibited at FOTODOKS, in Munich, Germany and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Our feature documentary, A Woman on the Outside, premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. The project was been supported by the Independent Film Project’s Documentary Lab (now The Gotham), the Logan Nonfiction Program, the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the ScreenCraft Film Fund, the Chicken & Egg’s Project Hatched and Subject Matter. The film received jury awards for Best Documentary at the American Black Film Festival and Diamond State Black Film Festival, Best North American Documentary at Mammoth Lakes Film Festival and Honorable Mention for Humanitarian Excellence and the Woods Hole Film Festival.
